What is a TIN?

A **Tax Identification Number (TIN)** is a unique number issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to identify taxpayers β€” both individuals and businesses β€” in Nigeria. It is the Nigerian equivalent of a tax ID.

Why Do You Need a TIN?

A TIN is mandatory for:

  • Opening a corporate bank account β€” Banks require a TIN for business accounts
  • Government contracts and tenders β€” You cannot bid without it
  • Importing and exporting goods β€” Required by Nigerian Customs
  • Filing business taxes β€” FIRS requires it for VAT registration and tax returns
  • Receiving payments above ₦5 million β€” Increasingly enforced by banks
  • Accessing government services β€” Ministry of Finance, NAFDAC, SON registrations

  • TIN vs RC Number β€” What's the Difference?

    | | TIN | RC Number |

    |--|-----|-----------|

    | Issued by | FIRS (tax authority) | CAC (company registry) |

    | Purpose | Tax identity | Business legal identity |

    | Who needs it | All businesses & individuals | LLC/Companies |

    | Required for | Banking, contracts, taxes | Legal existence, contracts |

**Bottom line:** You need both. Your RC Number proves your business exists. Your TIN proves it pays taxes.
